A 'topping out' ceremony at East Berkshire College's Langley College was held last week (Friday 1st February) to mark the progress of the building work on its new multi-purpose Sports Centre.

Staff, governors and students joined principal contractor Kier Construction and architects Bond Bryan to celebrate reaching the highest point of the build. As part of the ceremony, College Principal, Kate Webb, along with sports students Nicole Brown and Santino Bowen had the honour of laying three bricks to mark the auspicious occasion.

"It is fantastic to see our new facilities taking shape," enthused Principal Kate Webb. "The new multi-purpose Sports Centre, in particular, will be a valuable resource not only for our current and future students, but also the local community.

"The improvements to our Langley College mark a significant investment in the local area by East Berkshire College and are part of our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible facilities for students, staff and the local community."

Following the ceremony, guests were given the opportunity to take a guided tour of the site and appreciate the extent of the new state-of-the-art sports facilities, which are due to open in May 2013.

Student Nicole Brown, who is studying an activity and leadership level two course, said: ""I feel really lucky to have been able to go on site and see the building work. The building is bigger than I expected and I can't wait to see what it will all look like when it is finished. The Sports Centre will provide us with more professional facilities to train in and will encourage more students to keep fit and take up a sport, not just sports students."

Langley College, which is part of East Berkshire College, is currently undergoing a £16m makeover to provide new state-of-the-art learning facilities, including a new Hospitality & Catering Academy and multi-purpose Sports Centre, to meet the community's current and future learning needs.

The College is fast becoming a centre of excellence for sport offering specialist programmes in football, rugby, netball and boxing. The new Sports Centre will not only meet the needs of the College's successful Sports Academy, but also provide the local community with public use of new sports amenities.

Once the Sports Centre is completed, work will begin on transforming the former sports hall into an exciting new Hospitality & Catering Academy. Due for completion in August 2013, this will feature professional training kitchens and a working restaurant.

Glyn Salmon, Kier Construction director said, "We are delighted to be part of the East Berkshire College project team. Today's topping out ceremony is just one of the many events we are organising with the College, which reflects the true spirit of partnership adopted by everyone involved in this project."

The improvement project for Langley College will cost approximately £16m and is being funded mainly by the College, and part funded by a Government grant.
