Students give it some heart for charity

charity week1Putting their heart into fundraising, students at East Berkshire College have held a week-long series of events to raise over £3,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

Students and staff from the Langley Campus have been busy performing a host of treatments from manicures to massages, organising a cake sale and selling raffle tickets as part of their annual Charity Week.

The Hair and Beauty Department generously donated all proceeds from around 350 treatments in its training salons, which are open to the public. Meanwhile, silence was golden for travel and tourism students, who held a sponsored silence and pyjama day to generate funds. Sport science students were also in action taking blood pressure readings for 50p and giving valuable advice on the results.

Beauty therapy lecturer Laura Ellis says it was a great week, with students and staff coming up with lots of fun ways to raise funds.

"Each year we hold a charity week to raise money for a good cause. This year, our students and staff chose the British Heart Foundation because a number of their families have been affected by heart conditions.

"The students have been so enthusiastic and worked really hard to raise a record amount this year. The event is a great chance for students to learn about teamwork, find out about the work of the charity, and it is a valuable opportunity for hair and beauty students to gain experience working on real clients."

The training salons at the College's Langley Campus act as a working business to allow students to train on members of the public. For those interested in booking an appointment at the salon, please call 01753 793246.
