Glorious garden makeover for college

quad 5174_350pxStudents at East Berkshire College's Langley Campus are now enjoying the use of a new look recreation area, which incorporates a new performance space and café-style seating areas. The garden, which adjoins the College's cafeteria, was officially unveiled last week after being given a complete makeover with the help of students.

About 30 students on the Personal Options Programme, which is an entry-level course for people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, have been responsible for planting the new recreation area under the guidance of College staff. Through measuring the space, selecting, costing, buying and planting the shrubs; the students have been learning about finances, literacy, numeracy and teamwork.

"The students have all worked really hard and the new garden looks fabulous," said lecturer Marilyn Hall. "The project has enabled the students to develop their numeracy and literacy skills as well as a sense of pride in their work. It is great for the rest of the College to be able to see what these students have achieved."

Natasha Murray was one of the students who helped transform the garden, which is known as 'The Quad'.

"I really enjoyed planting the new garden. It has taught me about working as a team and it helped me with my maths as we had to work out how many plants would fit into the space and the cost."

As part of the project, the students have been growing and selling a range of plants and vegetables.
