Movie magic, Italian cuisine and futuristic technology combined to create a show-stopping Open Day at Langley College on Tuesday (8 November). Over 490 prospective students and their families visited the campus in Station Road to check out the state-of-the-art facilities and find out about over 800 courses.

From engineering to childcare, there was an array of displays and have-a-go activities running throughout the event to entertain and inform visitors. Highlights of the evening included the chance to experience the latest virtual reality technology in the College’s Innovation Centre and hairdressing students showcasing their skills by creating some fun hairstyles inspired by the movie Trolls.

In the motor vehicle and engineering department, students demonstrated the latest 3D printers and CNC milling machines, while talented catering students served up a delicious selection of Italian dishes and cakes to hungry guests. Visitors were even invited to have a go at making their own pizzas in the modern training kitchens.

Prospective students Hannah Germain and Ellie Firth, from Windsor, attended the event for advice on hair and beauty courses: “We heard about the Open Day at school, so we decided to come along to find out more. The salons look really professional and everyone was really helpful. We even had the chance to have a go at some hairdressing activities ourselves.”

Mary Langstone (17, from Maidenhead), who is studying a level three hairdressing course at the College, was on hand to provide advice from a student’s perspective: “At college you get treated more like an adult, you have the freedom to be more creative and, on my course, you have the chance to work on real customers. Coming to college has really inspired me to work hard, so I can open my own salon one day.”

Langley College, part of East Berkshire College, continues to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and last year completed a £30m refurbishment to provide state-of-the-art learning facilities for current and future students. These improvements included new hair and beauty salons, a sports centre and a Hospitality & Catering Academy.

Each year, the College helps thousands of individuals aged 14-90 to fulfil their ambitions through education and training. The College offers an extensive range of part-time, full-time and workplace training courses, from introductory right through to degree level.
