As part of their community project, 25 students from the Personal Options programme and community gardening course at East Berkshire College organised a special coffee morning in support of Breast Cancer Care. The students raised over £155 for the charity by selling a variety of cakes, hot drinks, plants, books, homemade felt hearts, mugs and raffle tickets to students and staff at Langley College.

The event formed part of a special business enterprise scheme developed by the College to teach students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities valuable life skills, which are transferable to the workplace. Along with building their confidence, the project develops the students' communication skills, numeracy, literacy and IT skills.

As well as planning and organising the fundraising event, the students were able to use their creative skills to design promotional flyers, stitch felt hearts and decorate the classrooms. Some of the students on the community garden course also grew plants to sell.

The enterprise project is a popular and valuable teaching tool according to lecturer Jenny Cobb. Jenny explains: "The event was a great success, thanks to the hard work and effort of the students. As well as raising money for a worthwhile cause, the event also helped the students develop their ability to work as a team and communicate effectively.

"Each year the programme aims to prepare students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities for life and work, by developing the skills and confidence they need to succeed."
