College celebrates outstanding A Level success

WWL 1403East Berkshire College students and staff are celebrating another year of superb A Level results, as final grades were revealed today (15th August 2012) after weeks of nervous anticipation.

Continuing to set high standards, the College’s full A Level pass rate was an outstanding 99.5%, ahead of the national average of 98.1%. The College also celebrated 100% pass rate in 21 out of 23 subjects including English subjects, maths, chemistry, biology, physics, accounting and ICT. In fact, in photography an outstanding 18 students achieved A*- A grades.

The College’s Windsor Campus was packed with nervous students waiting to open those all-important envelopes. Anxiety soon turned to smiles as they found out their marks.

One of the most outstanding students was Steven Burnett (19, from Slough), who achieved an A* in maths and two As in physics and biology.

“I’m delighted with my results. I’ve been thinking of going to university since I was in Year 7 and now it is really happening. I have a scholarship to go to Southampton University to study physics.”

Fellow student Gurjinder Cheema was elated with her results too. Having achieved an A* in Sociology, an A in English Language and a B in Government & Politics she has now secured her place at Brunel University.

“I’m so pleased. My final grades are even better than I expected. The A* is unbelievable. I’ve really enjoyed my time at College and my results mean I can now take up my place at university to study a degree in law.”

Having achieved their grades, many of the College leavers will now be going on to good universities and exciting employment opportunities.

Kate Webb, Principal of East Berkshire College, said: “Our students have done themselves proud. It is great to see so many young people fulfilling their potential. It is a huge credit not only to the students, but also their teachers. We wish all our students the very best of luck in their chosen university courses or career paths.

“With a growing reputation for excellence, we have seen continued demand for our courses. In fact, we have experienced a significant rise in the number of applications for this year, with A Levels, ICT, health & social care and hospitality & catering courses proving particularly popular.

“We have also seen no decrease in the number of our A Level students applying to university. Although degree courses in a subject with a clear career path such as pharmacology, midwifery and psychology are proving most popular. A clear indication that, now more than ever, young people are thinking seriously about their long-term career goals in the current economic climate.”
