There was a double celebration for East Berkshire College at this year’s annual Heist Awards, the premier national awards for education marketing. The College, which has colleges in Windsor and Langley, won silver for Marketing Department of the Year and bronze for Best Further Education Prospectus at the prestigious awards ceremony on Thursday (11th July).

Juliet Holloway, Director of Learner Services & Communications at East Berkshire College, said: “We are delighted to win, especially as we were up against such strong competition from colleges and universities across the UK. We are proud of our innovative marketing and PR campaigns and to receive national recognition for our work is a real honour. You have to reach a high standard of quality just to be shortlisted for these awards, so to actually win two awards is fantastic.

“We are particularly proud of our Marketing Department of the Year award as we were the only Further Education College in the UK to be shortlisted in this category and we were up against some tough competition from top universities.”

The Marketing Department of the Year Award was presented to the College for the outstanding work of its in-house marketing team over the last 12 months. The talented team of seven has produced campaigns of exceptional quality using a wide range of cost-effective and creative marketing techniques. This has included developing a new website and an alumni association, a corporate re-branding project and a communications campaign for the College’s £30m improvement project at its Langley College – including the launch of a brand new Hospitality & Catering Academy.

All marketing and communications activities are handled entirely in-house by the College’s marketing team, from all design work and copywriting to event management and PR. Every year, the team juggles a demanding workload, producing two prospectuses, internal and external newsletters, student recruitment campaigns, social media, website content, Open Days, awards ceremonies, information guides and creative PR campaigns.

The College’s award-winning prospectus was also praised for its refreshingly clear layout, strong brand identity, bold design, easy navigation and appropriateness for its audience. The inclusion of testimonials by current and former students, which provide a more personal view for prospective students, was also highlighted as a particular strength by the judges.

Education marketing’s equivalent of the Oscars, the Heist Awards recognise and celebrate outstanding professionalism and innovation in the marketing of colleges and universities. Now in their twenty-third year, the awards have become the premier event for the sector. This year’s awards were presented by actress and comedienne Meera Syal MBE and were judged by a panel of marketing professionals from both the public and private sector.

Simon Bracewell, of Havas People, organisers of the awards, said: “These annual awards showcase the sensational work that goes on in the further and higher education sectors. Entries this year wowed the judges once again. Institutions are undertaking some ground breaking work resulting in some fantastic return on investment and East Berkshire College is no exception. With only a team of seven, managing everything in-house, the College has achieved a lot in the past year and the judges felt that this impressive team deserved recognition.
