What's covered?
The new Education and Training qualifications replace the previous initial teacher training qualifications for those teaching in the lifelong learning sector, often referred to as PTLLS, CTLLS and DTLLS. These qualifications are for trainees who work, or want to work as teachers or trainers in the further education and skills sector.
The Level 3 Award is an introduction to teaching that will give an insight into the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, how to plan and deliver inclusive teaching sessions and how to assess and give constructive feedback. This qualification is suitable for those who are not yet in a teaching role and those who are considering teaching, but want to gain an insight into teaching to enable them to make career choices. It is also suitable for those who have just started in a teaching role but do not already have a Level 3 qualification and those in a training role who do not have a teaching qualification.
What do you need?
You are expected to be working above level 2, which is equivalent to having a minimum level of GSCE grade C in English and Maths. To demonstrate your competency in Maths and English, all applicants will be asked to complete an initial assessment and a pre-course task. You need to be 19+ and have an interest in teaching in the Further Education or Lifelong Learning sector.
The course requires a considerable amount of self-study (including research).
How you are assessed
The Award consists of 3 mandatory units which will be assessed through assignment work and delivery of a 30 minute taught session (micro teach). As well as attending the college for 4 hours each week, you will need to plan and protect at least another 4 hours self-study time in order to successfully complete the course and achieve the qualification. You must be able to commit yourself to attending all 12 weeks of the course, and organise your time and assignment work to meet course deadlines.
How Long?
This is a short 12 week course. You will be able to study in the day or the evening and the delivery will be classroom based. The programme will be run at our Langley campus on a termly basis.
What course next?
You will be able to apply to do a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training. The L3 award is designed to prepare for the teaching role - and the L4 qualification is designed to provide practice of the teaching role, so in order to apply for a place on the Level 4, candidates must have access to a minimum of 30 hours of teaching.
