What's covered?

The OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Learners with Dyslexia/Specific Learning Difficulties is designed to provide a route for continued professional development for teachers working with learners with specific learning difficulties. This year long course addresses the identification, assessment, planning and teaching of dyslexic learners. It also develops an understanding of national and regional Special Educational Needs policies.

This qualification is made up of 4 units covering SEN policy, assessing, teaching and reflective practice. The inclusion of much practical content is a strength of the East Berkshire College course.

Candidates will learn through lectures, workshops, assignments, teaching practice, sharing of good practice, observation of teaching (on a Saturday at the Windsor campus) and research.

What do you need?

It is recommended that candidates should have at least one year's experience of working within an educational setting. (This may include voluntary work.)

It is expected that candidates will have a high level of skills and be working at or above the equivalent of Level 3 in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.

Candidates need to teach two learners in the same phase of education but at different levels/key stages for a total of 20 hours.

How you are assessed

Successful completion of a range of theoretical and practical tasks, in addition to twenty hours of teaching two learners.

How Long?

Sessions of up to 4 hours on one evening for thirty weeks. Plus 3 Saturdays for observed lessons.

What course next?

Candidates will be able to progress to the OCR Level 7 Diploma in Assessing Dyslexia/Specific Learning Difficulties.
