What's covered?

This is a full time course designed to develop skills useful for mature students who wish to progress to Higher Education at East Berkshire College or a British university to study for a science related degree e.g. Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences or Higher National Diploma in Science. Access is appropriate for those returning to education after a number of years, for example, in employment, bringing up a family or having a career break. The course gives a thorough grounding in all aspects of science and includes units on:

Foundation Chemistry Introduction to Biotechnology Physical Science Mechanical Science Biological Chemistry Human Biology Genetics The Application of Physics to Medicine Applied Science Cell Biochemistry Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Microbiology and Immunology Waves and Quantum Theory

This lively and dynamic course is delivered through a combination of on-line interactive material and lectures including experienced science practitioners. Learners are expected to bring their own commercial experience to the course and apply theory to their own context. This means all learners are pro-active in contribution to the sessions ensuring the material taught is lively and relevant to real science scenarios.

Previous learners have directly used material covered in the course at work to lead projects and improve their performance and that of their teams.

What do you need?

This course is open to suitable candidates with sufficient interest and commitment. There are no formal entry requirements but candidates must be able to demonstrate a reasonable standard of written and spoken English. English and maths GCSE (grades A-C) would be an advantage. The course involves some interpretation of numerical data and assignments are in written documents so applicants are screened to check ability in these areas, additional support is available if needed.

How you are assessed

Work will be assessed through presentations, reports and essays. You must be able to commit yourself to the course of study in a mature and efficient way. You have to organise your time efficiently, be highly motivated, astute and be able to invest at least 20 hours a week of self-study.

How Long?

The course is for 1 year and will be based on classroom study and there is an expectation of self-study that includes research.

What course next?

Learners can progress onto HNC/HND/foundation degrees or full honours degree programmes and guidance is given throughout the course in Higher Education opportunities and careers. Assistance in making applications to Higher Education at East Berkshire College or universities will be provided by personal tutors.

What could this lead to?

A recognised Higher Education Qualification recognised internationally the HNC/HND is awarded by Edexcel or university programme. This qualification will help with career development.
