What's covered?

If you are looking for a job that's flexible, creative and pays a decent wage, then barbering could be the career for you. In the barbering and hairdressing sector, each day is different as it is a real people industry. If you are looking to change career or improve your prospects, this 12 week fast-track course is suitable for complete beginners and will start by giving you the basic barbering skills to prepare you for employment as a junior barber or stylist. The course will cover all the basic barbering techniques, which includes layering using scissors and working on beards. We'll teach you everything you need to know and help you to achieve an industry-recognised qualification to start your career in this creative and dynamic sector. All our lecturers are qualified professionals with real industry experience. You will learn in our state-of-the-art training salons, which feature the latest industry equipment and resources.

What do you need?

There are no formal entry qualifications although you will be required to take a College assessment. You will also require enthusiasm, motivation and a proven commitment to hard work, good time keeping and a desire to learn.

How you are assessed

Practical assessment takes place in the commercial salons and theory is assessed using online exams.

How Long?

The course is 12 weeks (including work experience hours carried out in the College's commercial salon and possible evening session).

What course next?

You can progress on to a Level 2 Hairdressing course.

What could this lead to?

Once you have achieved your Barbering Level 2 City and Guilds Diploma, you could enrol on to an apprenticeship, begin a unique career in barbering as a junior stylist or barber, you could become a self-employed, rent a chair in a salon or become a mobile barber.

A career in barbering will offer you flexible hours and a variety of opportunities, whether working in an established business or setting up on your own. The average national UK salary within this industry is £16,649 per annum (Source: www.payscale.com 2017).
