What's covered?

This apprenticeship consists of one or two days a week at college studying a variety of units such as; Health, Safety and welfare in construction, Principles of building construction, information and communication, Construction site barriers, Laying domestic drainage, Constructing foundations, slabs and paths in concrete. This college day incorporates both practical and theory lessons enabling the students to learn the skills and knowledge needed to pass the certificate.
The rest of the week learners are working in the appropriate environment to ensure they cover at least one of the following pathways to achieve the NVQ: Non-structural concreting, structural concreting, modular paving, laying kerbs and channels, general building operations, drainage construction, general construction and excavation and reinstatement.

What do you need?

You need to be working on domestic or commercial sites experiencing construction and civil engineering tasks to given specifications. Your employer would be expected to train and support you in the workplace so you have the experience to be competent in all of the mandatory and chosen optional units

How you are assessed

You will be assessed in the workplace as well as the college to ensure all the competencies are met. The range of methods include portfolio building, professional discussion and direct observations, as well as classroom teaching and online tests. You will have regular review meetings with your assessor and employer to support the achievement of the qualification.
