Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Apprenticeships

With a growing range of opportunities in more than 170 industries, apprenticeships are a great way to learn while you earn. They combine training at the College with practical skills learnt in the workplace. You gain on-the-job experience, get qualified in your chosen career and earn money – all at the same time.

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes, which combine training at the College with practical skills learnt in the workplace. Apprenticeships usually take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of apprenticeship, your ability and the industry sector.

What levels are there?

Apprenticeships are available at various levels with each leading to a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

Intermediate Apprenticeships
These courses lead to a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2, a certificate in Functional Skills (maths, English and ICT) and, in some cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification (e.g. BTEC). An NVQ Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs (A-C).

Advanced Apprenticeships
These courses lead to an NVQ Level 3, a certificate in Functional Skills (maths, English and ICT) and, in some cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification (e.g. BTEC). An NVQ Level 3 is equivalent to two A Levels.

Higher Apprenticeships
These courses lead to an NVQ Level 4 and, in some cases, a relevant Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree. The HND and Foundation Degree are equivalent to the first two years of a degree programme.

Degree apprenticeships
These courses lead to a level 6/7 qualification such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Anyone over the age of 16 can apply, whether you are just leaving school or have been working for years. Different apprenticeships have different entry requirements. You will be given an initial assessment to find the best route into your chosen apprenticeship.

You should also be employed or actively looking for relevant employment. In some cases, we can help you find a suitable employer or if you can’t find a job, you may be able to undertake part of your apprenticeship full-time at College and complete the rest once you have found employment. Please contact us and we will be happy to advise you.

What are the benefits?

An apprenticeship will enable you to:

  • earn money while you learn
  • gain on-the-job experience
  • achieve a nationally recognised qualification
  • earn job-specific skills
  • expand your knowledge
  • fit study around employment
  • improve your maths, English and ICT skills
  • improve your career prospects and chance of promotion

Who pays for my course?

Generally there is no fee charged to the apprentice. However, a contribution may be required from your employer depending on the size of their organisation.

Not ready for an apprenticeship? Try a traineeship

If you have little work experience or qualifications, then a traineeship could help you get ready for an apprenticeship or job in a variety of different sectors. Traineeships last up to a maximum of six months and will provide you with essential work preparation training, the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills, and the work experience you need to start an apprenticeship or gain employment. These courses are available for young people aged 16-24 (or up to 25 if you have a Learning Difficulty Assessment), who are qualified below Level 3 and not working more than 16 hours per week.
