With an Apprenticeship you get on-the-job training while building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time.
Below are a few of the more frequently asked questions (FAQs).
What is a NVQ? NVQs are vocational qualifications that train you to do a job. To get the qualification you will have to prove to an independent assessor that you can use your skills effectively in real work situations.
What’s the difference between an Apprenticeship and an Advanced Apprenticeship? With an Apprenticeship you work towards an NVQ Level 2 and with an Advanced Apprenticeship you work to Level 3. Both levels take in Key/Functional Skills and in most cases a technical certificate. The both normally take about two years. The College offers almost all of its courses at both levels.
Who can be an apprentice? Anyone aged 16-64, who is living in England and not taking part in full-time education can become an apprentice. However, graduates are not eligible for the Apprenticeship programme.
What qualifications do I need to become an apprentice? Different apprenticeships have different entry requirements. We will judge these during your initial assessment. But remember, we’re not just looking for formal qualifications – experience and commitment are just as important.
How do Apprenticeships work? The employers pays the apprentice a wage and gives on-the-job training up to NVQ qualification standards. The apprentice will also come into College one day a week, gaining skills useful for the job market – like team working, communication and using new technology. In addition, you will get a technical certificate, which gives further knowledge and understanding of your chosen job.
How do I choose the right apprenticeship for me? If you know what area you are interested in then great, you can apply online today. If not, talk to your Connexions Personal Adviser or give our Student Advisers in College a call. They will give you advice on what is the best option for you.
How much do apprentices get paid? Most apprentices are paid a salary that reflects their skills, experience, age and ability, e.g. a trainee bricklayer can earn around £12,500 per year, rising to around £20,000 for qualified and experienced bricklayers.
Will I get holidays while I’m an apprentice? Your employer will give you your terms of employment when you start your apprenticeship, but it will be around 20 days per year (plus Bank Holidays).
I’m already at work. Can I still become an apprentice? Yes, as long as you are aged 16-64 you can start an Apprenticeship. We will need to speak to your employer and undertake a health & safety evaluation with them to make sure its suitable.
What are my job prospects once I’ve finished? Most apprentices get a job after they have finished their qualification especially at the Advanced level.
