Langley College students bridge the generation gap with festive masterclass
Talented hospitality and catering students from Langley College, part of East Berkshire College, played host to Langley Haven Care Home yesterday (29th November 2016) when they organised a special two-course lunch and festive workshops for ten of its elderly residents.
The residents, who were all over 85 years old, visited the College’s Zest restaurant in Station Road to take part in two interactive masterclasses, which saw the students demonstrate how to decorate cakes and festive biscuits along with some fancy napkin folding perfect for any Christmas dinner table. The residents even had the chance to have a go at the activities themselves, with a little help from the students.
With the ladies and gentlemen from Langley Haven having worked up an appetite, the event culminated with a special two-course lunch, which was cooked and served by the students. The menu included such delights as Chicken Chasseur and Double Chocolate Cheesecake.
Roxana Chirita, Activities Coordinator at Langley Haven, explained: “The residents really enjoyed the event because the students were teaching them. It was lovely to see them interacting and learning from each other. Some of our residents can be quite quiet, but the students brought them out of themselves.
“The whole event was very well organised. The students and staff took great care to plan everything to meet the needs of our residents. We are hoping to plan another visit early next year and visit the College salon as well.”
Commenting at the day, Langley Haven resident Mary Smith said: “I really enjoyed my visit to the College as I don’t get to go out much now. The students showed us how to decorate cakes or biscuits and how to fold napkins. It was nice to talk to them about their lives and cooking.”
Marion Foster added: “I can remember when the College was built. It is fantastic that these facilities are open to the community. The quality of the restaurant is excellent.”
