College continues to invest in the future
As part of its multi-million pound improvement project at Langley College, East Berkshire College is delighted to announce that it will be undertaking an internal refurbishment of its hair and beauty training salons and its teaching facilities for health and social care.
This second phase of investment will focus on upgrading the teaching facilities inside the south-wing of the existing Langley College building to provide students with state-of-the-art learning environments. These improvements will include new commercial hair and beauty salons on the ground floor, enhanced facilities for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, a simulated hospital environment for Health & Social Care and a brand new Innovation Lab.
Scheduled to open in early 2014, the new commercial hair salons will incorporate professional cutting stations, the latest industry-standard equipment and a new public reception area. As well as being a teaching facility for those studying hair and beauty courses, the salons will be open to the public and act as a working business to allow students to train on real customers for an enhanced learning experience. A range of treatments will be on offer to the public including hairdressing, massage, make-up, manicures and pedicures.
Principal Kate Webb explains: “The College is investing heavily in its facilities and services in response to the changing needs of the individuals, businesses and communities we serve.
This second phase of investment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible facilities for current and future students. We believe these improvements will enable us to deliver an enhanced level of education and training, to ensure local people have the chance to develop the very latest skills and techniques employers require.
“We are particularly excited about the creation of a new Innovation Hub, which will feature a state-of-the-art Innovation Lab to showcase applied maths and science in new technologies and product design development.”
The first phase of improvement works at Langley College, which includes a new Hospitality & Catering Academy, began in August 2012 and is now nearing the final stages of construction. Due for completion in August 2013, the academy will feature professional training kitchens and a working restaurant to enable the College to deliver full and part-time courses in hospitality and catering for the first time.
Langley College has been at the heart of the community since 1976 and currently serves over 2,400 students from the Langley and Slough area.
Over the years, the College has continued to go from strength to strength in terms of raising standards and enhancing its range of courses. In February 2013, Ofsted rated the College as ‘good’ with outstanding features following a week-long inspection. Alongside other key strengths, the report recognised the real difference the College makes to the lives of its students in terms of their progress, success and employability.
Today, Langley College is the centre for most of the College’s main vocational courses, which all have specialist facilities. These include Motor Vehicle & Engineering, Construction, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, Computing & ICT and Health Care & Education Pathways along with ESOL & Languages.
